The Vegetable Gardens of Albendín
Albendín’s privileged location in the Guadajoz river plain allows for the proliferation of vegetable gardens, yielding some of the best vegetables and fruits on the peninsula.
The horticultural tradition goes back a long way. It was customary in Albendín for groups of market gardeners, 4 or 5 farmers each, to form. These groups shared a waterwheel to irrigate their lands with water from the Guadajoz river. With new irrigation techniques, this practice ceased, but the waterwheel restored by artisan Juan Antonio Hinojosa Reyes remains as a reminder of this tradition.
The Market Gardening Street Market “Sabores de Guadajoz” and the Tapas Route
It is held in August, during the eve of the fair in honor of the emigrant, offering products from Albendín’s traditional vegetable gardens: tomatoes, eggplants, onions, peppers, figs, plums, apples, peaches, melons, watermelons, pumpkins, and zucchinis. Pickles, cheeses, wooden crafts, olive oil, seeds, plants, soaps, and more can also be found.
During the same weekend, the market gardening tapas route is also established, in which participating bars and restaurants offer tapas made with these products.
The Emigrant Fair
During the Emigrant Fair, musical performances, flamenco nights, pasodobles, boleros, cumbias, gastronomy, children’s dance competitions, performances by sports school students, and children’s attractions like giant slides take place.
